If a tree falls in a forest and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound? If love is nurtured in the heart of one but is never expressed, does it exist or is it just a fantasy?

i read that somewhere.. and it struck a chord. i was thinking while on the bus yesterday (yes the bus is the place i do most of my thinking..) about memories. assuming a person is made up of his/her past (ie, you are who you are because of what you've gone through), it's reasonable to assume as well that his/her memories define him/her. (i am making sense so far?) and let's say you share a memory with someone, and the person loses his/her memory. does that mean that your shared experience doesn't exist anymore? theoretically it only happened in your mind, since to him/her it never occured. i know i know.. it makes no sense to you. but think again. if something can be considered real and actual even though it only exists in your mind, then are dreams real too?
