tragedy, like beauty, lies in the eye of the beholder. the person living in oblivion isn't necessarily more tragic than the person fighting it. on the other hand, the opposite isn't necessarily true either. it depends on who's judging, doesn't it?

by asking the question "who was more tragic?", Dr Sacks meant for us to wonder if Dr P was the more tragic one. I do admit, it is more tragic for the onlooker to watch Dr P, yet to Dr P (who I believe is probably the most important judge of all), there's no tragedy whatsoever.

so who cares what people think? who cares if another character in your story thinks your story is a tragedy? at the end of the day, what he thinks only matters to himself. as cliche as it may sound, it's how you view your life that matters to you.
